Ensemble is a London-based research and community organisation working at the intersection of AI safety, governance, and the philosophy of artificial intelligence. We produce original research that speaks across disciplinary lines. And we create spaces where researchers, engineers, policymakers, and the broader public think together about what is being built and what it means.
Our founding team spans technical AI research, psychology and law, and public policy. We believe the most useful thinking about AI comes from people willing to work across the boundaries that convention has drawn.
We are not a policy shop that treats the technology as a black box. We are not a lab that treats governance as someone else's problem. We sit in the space between, and we think that space is where the most important work will be done.
London is home to DeepMind, the Alan Turing Institute, UCL, Imperial, and one of the densest concentrations of AI research talent in the world. It is also the seat of one of the most active governments on AI regulation globally, and home to world-class faculties in law, philosophy, psychology, and the social sciences.
The technical community, the policy community, and the public are all here — but they are not yet in the same room often enough, or with the right framing. That is what we provide.
The systems being built today — from large language models to autonomous agents to multimodal architectures — are developing faster than the frameworks meant to govern them.
The window for shaping how these technologies are understood, regulated, and directed is open now. It will not stay open indefinitely.
We do not pretend to have answers to questions that remain genuinely open. We begin small, with rigour as our founding principle.
The most useful thinking about AI comes from people willing to work across the boundaries that convention has drawn. We exist in the space between.
The people building, governing, studying, and living with AI all have a stake in its direction. Understanding must precede action.
Our team spans technical AI research, psychology, law, and public policy.
The future is not a forecast. It is a design problem. And design problems require more than designers. They require everyone who will live with the result.
